LAUP Parents to Further Preschool Cause Among Lawmakers

For a group of LAUP parents, Feb. 9-10 mark the days when they will play an important role in strengthening support among federal officials to increase access to preschool for children in Los Angeles County and beyond.

On those two days, the parents will join LAUP staff, and members of the LAUP Board and Corporate Council (comprised of business executives supportive of early childhood education) to stress the value of preschool to U.S. government officials.

"Our goal is to influence leaders in Washington to place early childhood education higher on their agenda," said Maria Veloz, Vice President of Public Affairs and Advancement. "We also want policymakers to have a better understanding of LAUP and its programs. What better way to hear that than from LAUP parents, whose children attend or have attended preschool and have benefited both academically and socially."

For some of these parents, the trip will be their first opportunity to talk directly with members of congress and staff who represents them.

"The parents will help us put a face on the value of preschool, since they have first-hand experience based on their children's attendance," Veloz said. "We look forward to some very productive meetings."
