For a group of LAUP parents, Feb. 9-10 mark the days when they will play an important role in strengthening support among federal officials to increase access to preschool for children in Los Angeles County and beyond.
Thanks to the support of U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, LAUP has been allotted a $150,000 appropriation by Congress that will be used to strengthen preschool education efforts in Los Angeles County.
LAUP staff and preschool providers recently held a successful collaborative community event — Winterfest — which was designed to highlight the importance of preschool and increase student enrollment in Lynwood.

While this proposal does not directly go after the funds that LAUP is contracted to receive from First 5 LA and First 5 California, it puts that funding at great risk.
For much of the last century, educators and many scientists believed that children could not learn math at all before the age of five, that their brains simply were not ready.
